COLLECTION

The surface design of the kimono and haori in this collection were likely inspired by European modern art. They are categorized by the Western artist or art movement that apparently influenced them. These garments were created by Japanese designers, rather than by an artist or someone from that movement. Examples of art are shown that may be the source of inspiration: sometimes literally, but more often the kimono or haori captures the style and feeling of the example. The dates refer to the time span of the movement, or to the lifespan of an individual artist, rather than to when the kimono/haori was made. Many of these kimono and haori show multiple influences, and could be placed in more than one category; here they are placed in the category that they most resemble. All pieces in the collection are women’s garments, except where noted.
