GEORGES ROUALT 1871-1958

Georges Rouault first trained as a glass painter, which is probably the source of his paintings’ similarity to leaded glass, with their black contours and glowing colors.

This haori is unusual in that its technique is the traditional and highly-esteemed shibori (a tying and dyeing process), while the pattern is wholly modern. 20th-century art remains a design inspiration through the present era.
