FUTURISM 1907-1944

Originating in Italy, Futurism was enamored of speed, technology, youth, violence, fascism, and the industrial city. The Futurists practiced in every artistic medium, and to some extent influenced Constructivism, Art Deco, Surrealism, and Dada.

A Futurist interpretation of the rose, a popular motif during the Taisho Era—the rose being an exotic Western flower not cultivated in Japan at the time. The designer of this kimono has abstracted the rose so completely in the futurist style that it is barely recognizable.
