IMPRESSIONISM 1867-1886

French Impressionists were captivated by the Japanese woodblock prints that began appearing in Paris in the late 1850s, and most had their own private collections. The prints’ scenes from everyday life appealed to the Impressionists, as did the composition, colors, and lack of perspective. The religious, allegorical, or mythological themes deemed worthy by the art academy teachers were happily absent.
Japanese artists and designers were, in turn, enamored of the French Impressionist painters, and apparently used their work as inspiration for this kimono.
