ART AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT 1860-1900

The Arts and Crafts movement in Europe was heavily influenced by Japanese design, and in its turn was popular in Japan, a remarkable instance of cross-fertilization between two cultures. Arts and Crafts practitioners admired Japanese works because they were thought to derive from a culture free from the influence of industrialism, and because of its ties to the natural world.
Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain and Europe, the Mingei movement in Japan was officially established in 1926. It promoted the work of named artists and crafts people who were preserving and raising the standards of traditional craft threatened by industrialization.
